This FREE event is co-sponsored by The Loudoun County Community Services Board (CSB) and Loudoun County Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Services and features a variety of entertainment, food and a community art project.

May is National Public Awareness Month for Mental Health Issues and Wellness. The goal of this event is to raise public awareness about mental health throughout the Loudoun community in a fun, relaxed setting. Important information about mental health issues, including depression and suicide prevention information will be provided. This fun event for all ages will showcase a variety of performers, local bands, comedians, jugglers, musicians, activities, and an interactive community art project in and around the newly opened Arts Center in picturesque Franklin Park. Red Hot & Blue will offer their world-famous barbeque and refreshments will also be available. Organizers invite EVERYONE to join us for a "Sunday in the Park with Friends!"

Calling Poets of All Ages

Let your muse be heard at the First Annual Loudoun Poetry Slam to be hosted by Tally Ho Theatre in Leesburg on Sunday, June 29 from 8-10 PM. The event is sponsored by Young Voices Foundation, a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides literacy programs and writing opportunities for youth, with support from local teen writing groups.

Young Voices Foundation is currently accepting poetry submissions for the slam. Poems must be suitable for a family audience and be no more than two pages typed/1.5 spaced in length. Poets who are selected to participate in the slam will be notified by the program sponsors. A $5 entry fee for students and a $10 entry fee for adults will be due upon acceptance.

Poets are invited to submit their poems to Bobbi.Carducci@youngvoicesfoundation.org. Please attach your poem and include contact information.

Tickets to attend the First Annual Loudoun Poetry Slam will be available in June. The cost will be $10 per ticket, payable in advance. Poetry slam participants will be admitted free of charge. Tally Ho Theatre will donate 50% of all ticket sales to the Young Voices Foundation for future literacy programs locally and nationally. Leesburg Town Flag Design Contest

The Town of Leesburg is sponsoring a competition to design an official Town flag. The goal is to produce a flag that captures the essence of the Town’s rich history.  The winning design will be unveiled at the official ceremony marking the Town of Leesburg’s 250th Anniversary on September 14, 2008.

There is no entry fee, and official rules and an entry form can be found on the 250 anniversary section of the Town’s website. The top five designs will be selected by an independent panel and presented to the public. Selection of the winning design will be based on votes cast by the public at a variety of venues, including the Town’s web site. The winner of the contest will receive a display size flag. Flad design submission ends June 30.

In addition, a children's competition will be held for those of between 2 and 18 years of age. The top five will receive a certificate and a gift from the Leesburg Town Council at the birthday Bash!  All children's entries will be considered for the Town Flag Competition, as well.

 

Loudoun Symphonic Winds "Movie Night" Concert

The Loudoun Symphonic Winds Presents its final concert of the season Saturday, May 17.  The program, “Movie Night”, under the direction of music director, Dr. Gilbert Corella, will begin with  Jay Bocook’s arrangement of Hans Zimmer’s “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” Other numbers to be performed include “Over the Rainbow”, arranged by Jerry Brubaker, selections from “Silverado”, a “James Bond Suite” and concluding with an arrangement by Warren Barker of “Hooray for Hollywood”  The concert will begin at 7:30 pm at Sterling Middle School, 201 West Holly Ave in Sterling.  A donation of $5/person or $10/family is requested.

Fiesta de Mayo at Jabberü - Free Event for Children

Jabberu is hosting Fiesta de Mayo at their newly opened Ashburn location on Friday, May 9th from 5:30 to 6:30 pm. This event will be a celebration of Latin American cultures and is open to all children (free-of-charge) ages four to eight. Jabberü's native Spanish-speaking instructors will lead the children through fun games and traditional hands-on crafts. Children will learn how to greet all of their new friends in Spanish, sing traditional Latin American songs, and hear traditional Latin American stories.

Round Hill Volunteer Fire and Rescue Events

RHVFD SELLS MOTHERS DAY FLOWERS: Mothers Day Flowers will be sold on Friday and Saturday, May 9th and 10th at the firehouse. A wide variety of flowers & prices will be offered. The sale will run from 9am till 6pm on Friday, and from 8am until sold out on Saturday. To get to the firehouse, take Virginia Route 7 to the Round Hill Exit, turn North onto Main Street (Route 719 North), and the fire station is on the left. We also need fire and rescue volunteers to help us answer calls in our community. Please stop by, meet our members and volunteer with us!

OPEN HOUSE: The RHVFD will host an Open House on Saturday, May 24th from 10am till 4pm at the firehouse. Held in conjunction with the Town of Round Hill's Annual Festival, the department will also offer fresh BBQ for sale, a Moonbounce and will have a dress-up station where kids can try on firefighter turnout gear. With a theme of community service, a variety of local organizations will be featured, including the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office doing Child ID kits, the INOVA Blood Donor Bloodmobile, the Medical Reserve Corps, and Loudoun County Animal Care and Control.

Nominations Sought for Governor's Awards for the Arts

Nominations are now being sought for the Governor's Awards for the Arts 2008 which will be presented by Governor Timothy M. Kaine in September. The Awards, which have been presented only three times in Virginia, recognize outstanding lifetime achievement by Virginia artists, arts organizations and those who support and encourage the arts.

Jeffrey Stern, Manager of the Franklin Park Arts Center will serve as Area Coordinator for Loudoun and Fauquier Counties.

The Governor's Awards are administered by the Virginians for the Arts Foundation and former First Lady of Virginia Jeannie Baliles is serving as the State Chair. "While the governor's Awards spotlight the creative spirit throughout the Commonwealth, they also provide an opportunity to demonstrate how the arts contribute to the quality of life in our individual communities," said (Coordinator). "Our area is rich in the cultural arts, and I am honored to be asked to serve on this important program that recognizes their significance."

Nominations may be made by anyone in the Commonwealth and must be sent or e-mailed to the Virginia Commission for the Arts no later than May 15, 2008. Forms are available online at www.arts.virginia.gov. Nominees must be native Virginians or current residents; businesses and organizations must currently operate in the state.

A blue ribbon panel of judges will select 10 award winners based upon the nomination materials. The panel will be asked to have diversity among the winners in artistic discipline and region of the state, and the winners will be announced August 1. An awards ceremony will be held at the Capitol in Richmond in September.

No public funds are involved in the Governor's Awards which are made possible through generous support from sponsors including Dominion, Exxon/Mobil, Norfolk Southern, Philip Morris USA and Virginia Natural Gas

Adult Computer Classes

Have you been putting off learning computer skills or do you need help in certain areas? Here is an inexpensive way to get the skills you want. Classes are limited to 5 students/5 computers. These adult computer classes are geared toward the novice and are being offered at the Claude Moore Community Center. Classes are on Mondays 7 to 8:30 p.m. Microsoft Word is $89 and will be held 5/12. Microsoft PowerPoint is $59. and will be held 5/14. Pre-registration is required for all classes. Belly Dancing Workshop

Belly Dancing Workshop Series have been scheduled at Claude Moore Community Center, Tuesdays 5/20 and 6/3. All sessions are from 7:45 to 9:45 p.m. The cost is $48.  Pre-registration is required and class size is limited. The workshop will introduce the basic concepts and movements characteristic of popular belly dance styles. Instructors will focus on proper technique for aesthetics, safety, fitness and FUN! Absolute beginners will gain a solid understanding of the fundamental movement vocabulary. For those with previous experience, it is an opportunity to improve skills and expand movement vocabulary while polishing your techniques. Golf Tournament Players & Sponsors Needed

The Round Hill Volunteer Fire Dept. is in need of players and sponsors for the Second Annual Golf Tournament to be held at the Stoneleigh Golf and Country Club on Monday, May 19, 2008. Individual players and foursomes are welcome with an early registration fee of $125 for individual players and $475 per foursome (after May 7th, late registrations will cost $150 and $500 respectively).

There are four sponsorship levels available, including: Patron Sponsor ($75 or more, in-kind or cash); Partial Hole Sponsor with a maximum of four per hole ($100 or more); Solo Hole Sponsor ($500 or more); Hole-in-One Sponsor ($1,750 or more, in-kind or cash); and Beverage Cart Sponsor ($1,000 or more). Deadline for sponsors is May 7, 2008. All sponsors will receive a certificate of recognition and, depending on level of commitment made, signs at a hole, name on the program, etc.

36th Annual Lucketts Fair

The 36th Annual Lucketts Fair will take place August 23 and 24, 2008, promising another year of “Fresh Squeezed Fun With Home-Grown Flavor!”  The Old Lucketts School, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, serves as the backdrop for a genuine, old-fashioned country fair held each August in beautiful Loudoun County, Virginia.  

Juried, handmade crafts, quality antiques and historic and country-life demonstrations are the centerpiece of the fair, with bluegrass bands playing in an outdoor gazebo.  Two additional stages offer live music and family entertainment, all included in the admission price.  Folks will enjoy down-home food like hand-churned ice cream, ribs and country ham sandwiches.  There is fun for all ages with country contests like pie-eating and rooster-crowing.  Younger kids flock to the farmyard petting zoo, tractor pedal pulls and pony rides in the woods

  

The Lucketts Fair takes place at the Lucketts Community Center and Park, located on Route 15 eight miles north of Leesburg, Virginia.  An average of 15,000 people attend the fair. Admission is $8 per person with no charge for children under six.   There are discounts on advance tickets for groups of 10 or more.  No pets or alcohol are permitted.  Parking is free.
