Loudoun Archaeological Foundation Announces Program on “The Civil War Soldiers’ Life,”

Dr. David T. Clark, Executive Director for the Loudoun Archaeological Foundation, Inc., (LAF) announced today that LAF and the Claude Moore Historic Park have joined forces to present an exciting historical and educational program for the whole family on Saturday, September 6, 2008 at the Claude Moore Historic Park in Sterling, Virginia at 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. This event, entitled “The Civil War Soldiers’ Life,” will depict that historic time period as seen through archaeology of the period and as interpreted by professional re-enactors in anticipation of the upcoming 150th anniversary of the Civil War

LAF and the Claude Moore Historic Park encourage the whole community bring your families out to the park and visit the nine (9) individual stations to learn about the real life of the Civil War soldier. Look at artifacts archaeologists have found at Civil War encampment/fort sites and discover what they tell us about a soldier’s life. See and hear “interpreters” tell tales of civil war life and match artifacts with real or replicated equipment. Learn about the soldier’s camp life, their arms/equipment, foodways, folkways and much more. Most stations will have take-home items for kids and they can collect pieces of a secret civil war puzzle. The nine individual stations include the following:

  • Enlistment Station: Sign-up/muster/inspection. Kids will “enlist” and receive a home-made haversack to collect things at stations along the way.
  • Uniform/Military Equipment Station: See interpreters wearing/showing a variety of Civil War uniforms/equipment. (Artifacts: see dozens of different archaeological items from uniforms and equipment).
  • Medical/”Saw-Bones” Station: Learn all about Civil War medicine, medical treatment and medical kits/supplies. (Artifacts: kits/surgical tools, medicinal bottles, ointment pots, and more).
  • Signal Flag Station: Discover the Signal Corps and learn about signal codes used at Guilford Station at Claude Moore.
  • Weapons Station: See a variety of rifles and pistols (Artifacts: Minie Balls, “cleaner” rounds, ball shot and other weaponry artifacts).
  • Civil War Music Station: Enjoy live Civil War period music throughout the day.
  • Foodways Station: What’s cookin’ for the soldiers? Learn about some common camp foods. What is Hardtack? Smell a Hot Pot cooking over an open fire. Check-out the field-kitchen equipment. (Artifacts: food bone, crate nails and other foodways artifacts).
  • Artillery Station: Hear details about Civil War artillery. (Artifacts: Cannonballs, mortar rounds, shot and equipment).
  • Tent-Life Station: Discover a soldier’s life around the Tent: Resting, eating, drinking. (Artifacts: mess equipment, drinking container fragments, smoking pipes, etc.

Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) Loudoun campus will sponsor a “Fill-The-Truck” food drive event on our campus during NOVA Day, Tuesday, September 9, 2008 from 11:30am-3:30pm.

NOVA Day is an annual welcome back event, for our students, that includes a BBQ cook out, carnival rides and games. In conjunction with NOVA Day, we will have a food drive on campus. We will donate the collected food to the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank, which is a nonprofit Virginia corporation that was established in 1981 to help feed people in our community. Blue Ridge Area Food Bank will be present with their van which we hope to fill.

To make this event a success we hope to load the food bank van with as many canned good donations as possible from not only students, but also the community. NOVA is the nation’s second largest community college with six campuses and two centers. The Loudoun campus alone has over 7,000 students enrolled. In order to obtain maximum participation we are seeking your support in covering this event live.

We hope that you will be able to participate in “Fill-The-Truck” food drive. This event will help kick off our week long food drive that is scheduled October 20-24.

Let us celebrate Constitution Week September 17 - 23, by resolving to be better-informed and responsible citizens.

Loudoun Soil and Water Conservation District and the Town of Leesburg to Host Rain Barrel Workshops

Two workshops planned for residents in September

The Loudoun Soil and Water Conservation District and the Town of Leesburg will be presenting two workshops for Leesburg residents to learn more about the benefits of rain barrels, and to make one to take home.  The workshops will be held Wednesday, September 24, from 6:00 p.m. to7:00 p.m., and Thursday, September 25, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Tuscarora Creek Park in Leesburg.

Why rain barrels? Rain barrels have started to re-emerge as an economical and practical way for homeowners to conserve water, reduce runoff, save money, and help protect our waters.  A rain barrel collects the water that runs off of a roof, making it available to water plants, fill a birdbath, wash the car, or for other uses requiring water.  Collected water can even be used in toilet tanks when a well pump is not working.  This water is free, and it is collected before it picks up sediment and contaminants that pollute our streams, rivers (including the Potomac), and eventually the Chesapeake Bay.

The workshops are for Leesburg residents only, and participants are reminded to dress appropriately as they will be constructing their own barrel, which have been graciously supplied by the Town of Leesburg Environmental Advisory Commission. There will be a $50 per barrel charge, and pre-registration is required. Due to limited supply and availability, there will be a two barrel per household limit.  A registration form can be downloaded from the Town of Leesburg website at www.leesburgva.gov.

For more information, please call Loudoun Soil and Water Conservation District at 703.777.2075, or Irish Grandfield at the Town of Leesburg, 703.771.2766.

A Hometown Street Fair

2nd Annual Court and Market Days of Leesburg will be held Saturday, October 18, 2008

Join your friends, family, and neighbors as we celebrate Leesburg this fall.  The 2nd Annual Court and Market Days of Leesburg will be held Saturday, October 18, 2008 and will celebrate more than just history! The streets of Historic Downtown Leesburg will be transformed into a festival area that beckons local residents to come and be a part of the festivities and see why Leesburg is called the “Hometown of the 21st Century.” Spend the day playing games, watching demonstrations, practicing handmade craft techniques, listening to local heritage music and of course, enjoying great festival foods. This street fair is designed to bring together Leesburg’s many residents, both life-long and new to the area, and join as a community to celebrate the town we call home.

During this street fair, festival-goers will also have the opportunity to view Leesburg the way it might have looked during the 19th Century and how it has progressed to the town it is today. History will come to life during Court and Market Days of Leesburg. When court was in session during the 18th and 19th Centuries, people from all over the county and beyond gathered here at the crossroads of Leesburg to conduct court business, shop local merchants, socialize with neighbors, and discuss current events. Two hundred and fifty years later, we examine this special time in Leesburg’s history. Take a stroll through the festival and see Leesburg’s roots as well as how we have progressed to today.

Just as the shops of Downtown Leesburg are an integral part of life today, so to were the vendors and peddlers that filled the streets during court days. Peddlers selling hand-made goods as well as demonstrators showing classic artesian techniques will be part of the day’s festivities. Local crafters, artisans, and vendors are invited to join this event. Other crafters and guilds willing to demonstrate their techniques are encouraged to join the show as well. Examples of crafts include weaving, candle making, soap making, pottery throwing, glass blowing, baked goods, and so many others. All hand-made craft items will be considered.

For more information about this event call or about becoming a vendor, please visit our website at www.idalee.org or contact Ida Lee Park Recreation Center at 703-777-1368.
